How To: Get Directions to Anywhere from Anywhere

October 18, 2012 · by Tom

It’s a dark windy morning and you have no idea where you are. But, nonetheless, you need your Starbucks. If you have your iPhone you can quickly locate and get directions to the nearest one. It’s as simple as that!

If you read and understand this tutorial, you’ll never be lost again! So let’s get cracking.

First, open up your Maps application.

You’ll see something like this screenshot below. Here is where you can instantly figure out where you are simply by touching the little arrow button located in the bottom-left of the screen. This will pinpoint your current location.

Next, touch to type in the Search field. Now type whatever it is you’re looking for.

In this example, it is Starbucks! You’ll see some suggestions pop up while typing. If you see what you’re looking for in one of the suggestions, go ahead and touch it. If not, finish out your typing and hit Search.

After hitting search, it’ll take you back to the map and drop pins on locations that meet your search. Touching a pin will bring up an info bubble. Look over your options and find the one you want.

When you know which “pin drop” is indicating the location you wish to pursue, bring up the info bubble for that dropped pin and touch the blue arrow button found in the info bubble.

This will give you a more detailed look at that particular pin drop location. If it doesn’t look quite right, you can still go back by pushing Map at the top left of the screen. But if it is what you’re looking for, go ahead and touch Directions to Here.

Now it’ll show you something like this:

If this looks correct (and most likely is) go ahead and touch Route at the top right of your screen.

And that’s it! You will now see the best viable route to your location. You can pinch in and out to zoom on the map. I recommend hitting Start at the top right of your screen to have your iphone give you turn-by-turn directions to your destination.

Depending on what iPhone you have, some newer iPhones will even speak the directions to you! This is very handy (no pun intended) when you’re trying to drive and follow directions simultaneously.

At anytime, you can hit the Overview button located at the top-left of the screen to get a bird’s eye view of your trip. This can really be helpful when you want to see the general direction your iPhone is taking you.

Also, in order to get back to do a new search, simply touch Clear at the top left of your screen.

Now, thanks to Simple iPhone, you’ll never be lost again! 🙂
