How To: Make Your iPhone Read Out Loud To You

March 6, 2012 · by Sam

Have you ever been driving or doing some other activity when you received a long email. You probably wanted to know right away what the email said, but you didn’t want to (or couldn’t) take the time to read it. Speak Selection to the rescue!

With Speak Selection enabled, you can have your iPhone read to you any text that you highlight. This can come in handy when, for instance, you are driving and receive a long email that you want to read.

This tutorial will teach you how to enable and disable Speak Selection, as well as how to adjust the Speak Selection speaking rate.

Here’s how to turn on Speak Selection:

First go into your “Settings” app.

Next, find and tap “General”.

Scroll down until you find “Accessibility”. Tap it.

Next, tap on the “Speak Selection” menu item.

Finally, tap the toggle next to where it says “Speak Selection”.

Speak selection is now turned on. Underneath the toggle you will see a sliding bar that allows you to adjust the speaking rate. The closer you move the slider to the rabbit on the right, the faster the speaking rate will be. Once you release the slider after moving it, you will hear a short sentence that lets you hear how fast you have set the the speaking to be.

You can use Speak Selection just about anywhere that you can select text. Here is an example using Speak Selection in iMessage. Simply highlight the text, and then tap “Speak” in the context menu.

The speaking will start immediately and will read whatever you had highlighted.

You can also use Speak Selection when you are browsing the web.

That’s all there is to it. Now sit back, relax, and let Speech Selection read another post on SimpleiPhone to you.
